शक्ति की उपासना का पर्व है नवरात्र

मां दुर्गा के नौ रूपों का ध्यान सारी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण करने वाला होता है। दुर्गा पूजा के दौरान माता के इन्हीं रूपों की भक्ति-भाव से पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है:

1. शैलपुत्री

पहले स्वरूप में देवी मां पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती के रूप में विराजमान हैं। नंदी नामक वृषभ पर सवार ' शैलपुत्री ' के दाहिने हाथ में त्रिशूल और बाएं हाथ में कमल का पुष्प है। शैलराज हिमालय की कन्या होने के कारण इन्हें शैलपुत्री कहा गया। इन्हें समस्त वन्य जीव-जंतुओं की रक्षक माना जाता है। दुर्गम स्थलों पर स्थित बस्तियों में सबसे पहले शैलपुत्री के मंदिर की स्थापना इसीलिए की जाती है कि वह स्थान सुरक्षित रह सके।

2. ब्रह्माचारिणी

दूसरी दुर्गा ' ब्रह्माचारिणी ' को समस्त विद्याओं की ज्ञाता माना गया है। इनकी आराधना से अनंत फल की प्राप्ति और तप , त्याग , वैराग्य , सदाचार , संयम जैसे गुणों की वृद्धि होती है। ' ब्रह्माचारिणी ' का अर्थ हुआ , तप की चारिणी यानी तप का आचरण करने वाली। यह स्वरूप श्वेत वस्त्र पहने दाएं हाथ में अष्टदल की माला और बाएं हाथ में कमंडल लिए हुए सुशोभित है। कहा जाता है कि देवी ब्रह्माचारिणी अपने पूर्व जन्म में पार्वती स्वरूप में थीं। वह भगवान शिव को पाने के लिए 1000 साल तक सिर्फ फल खाकर रहीं और 3000 साल तक शिव की तपस्या सिर्फ पेड़ों से गिरी पत्तियां खाकर की। कड़ी तपस्या के कारण उन्हें ब्रह्माचारिणी कहा गया।

3. चंद्रघंटा

शक्ति के रूप में विराजमान मां चंद्रघंटा मस्तक पर घंटे के आकार के चंद्रमा को धारण किए हुए हैं। देवी का यह तीसरा स्वरूप भक्तों का कल्याण करता है। इन्हें ज्ञान की देवी भी माना गया है। बाघ पर सवार मां चंद्रघंटा के चारों तरफ अद्भुत तेज दिखाई है। इनके शरीर का रंग स्वर्ण के समान चमकीला है। यह तीन नेत्रों और दस हाथों वाली हैं। इनके दस हाथों में कमल , धनुष-बाण , कमंडल , तलवार , त्रिशूल और गदा जैसे अस्त्र-शस्त्र हैं। कंठ में सफेद पुष्पों की माला और शीर्ष पर रत्नजडि़त मुकुट विराजमान हैं। यह साधकों को चिरायु , आरोग्य , सुखी और संपन्न होने का वरदान देती हैं। कहा जाता है कि यह हर समय दुष्टों के संहार के लिए तैयार रहती हैं और युद्घ से पहले उनके घंटे की आवाज ही राक्षसों को भयभीत करने के लिए काफी होती है।

4. कुष्मांडा

चौथे स्वरूप में देवी कुष्मांडा भक्तों को रोग , शोक और विनाश से मुक्त करके आयु , यश , बल और बुद्धि प्रदान करती हैं। यह बाघ की सवारी करती हुईं अष्टभुजाधारी , मस्तक पर रत्नजड़ित स्वर्ण मुकुट पहने उज्जवल स्वरूप वाली दुर्गा हैं। इन्होंने अपने हाथों में कमंडल , कलश , कमल , सुदर्शन चक्र , गदा , धनुष , बाण और अक्षमाला धारण किए हैं। अपनी मंद मुस्कान हंसी से ब्रह्मांड को उत्पन्न करने के कारण इनका नाम कुष्मांडा पड़ा। कहा जाता है कि जब दुनिया नहीं थी , तो चारों तरफ सिर्फ अंधकार था। ऐसे में देवी ने अपनी हल्की-सी हंसी से ब्रह्मांड की उत्पत्ति की। वह सूरज के घेरे में रहती हैं। सिर्फ उन्हीं के अंदर इतनी शक्ति है , जो सूरज की तपिश को सहन कर सकें। मान्यता है कि वह ही जीवन की शक्ति प्रदान करती हैं।

5. स्कन्दमाता

भगवान स्कन्द (कार्तिकेय) की माता होने के कारण देवी के इस पांचवें स्वरूप को स्कन्दमाता के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस रूप में वह कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं , इसलिए इन्हें पद्मासन देवी भी कहा जाता है। इनका वाहन भी सिंह है। इन्हें कल्याणकारी शक्ति की अधिष्ठात्री कहा जाता है। यह दोनों हाथों में कमलदल लिए हुए और एक हाथ से अपनी गोद में ब्रह्मस्वरूप सनतकुमार को थामे हुए हैं। स्कन्द माता की गोद में उन्हीं का सूक्ष्म रूप छह सिर वाली देवी का है। अत: इनकी पूजा-अर्चना में मिट्टी की छह मूर्तियां सजाना जरूरी माना गया हैं।

6. कात्यायनी

यह दुर्गा देवताओं और ऋषियों के कार्यों को सिद्ध करने लिए महर्षि कात्यायन के आश्रम में प्रकट हुईं। उनकी पुत्री होने के कारण इनका नाम कात्यायनी पड़ा। देवी कात्यायनी दानवों व पापी जीवियों का नाश करने वाली हैं। ये ऋषि-मुनियों को कष्ट देने वाले दानवों को अपने तेज से ही नष्ट कर देती थीं। यह सिंह पर सवार , चार भुजाओं वाली और सुसज्जित आभा मंडल वाली देवी हैं। इनके बाएं हाथ में कमल और तलवार व दाएं हाथ में स्वस्तिक व आशीर्वाद की मुदा है।

7. कालरात्रि

देवी का सातवां स्वरूप देखने में भयानक अवश्य है , लेकिन यह सदैव शुभ फल देने वाला होता है। इन्हें ' शुभंकरी ' भी कहा जाता है। ' कालरात्रि ' केवल शत्रु एवं दुष्टों का संहार करती हैं। यह काले रंग-रूप वाली , केशों को फैलाकर रखने वाली और चार भुजाओं वाली दुर्गा हैं। यह वर्ण और वेश में अर्द्धनारीश्वर शिव की तांडव मुदा में नजर आती हैं। इनकी आंखों से अग्नि की वर्षा होती है। एक हाथ से शत्रुओं की गर्दन पकड़कर दूसरे हाथ में खड्ग-तलवार से उनका नाश करने वाली कालरात्रि विकट रूप में विराजमान हैं। इनकी सवारी गधर्व यानि गधा है , जो समस्त जीव-जंतुओं में सबसे अधिक परिश्रमी माना गया है।

8. महागौरी

नवरात्रों के आठवें दिन महागौरी की उपासना की जाती है। इससे सभी पाप धुल जाते हैं। देवी ने कठिन तपस्या करके गौर वर्ण प्राप्त किया था। उत्पत्ति के समय आठ वर्ष की आयु की होने के कारण नवरात्र के आठवें दिन इनकी पूजा की जाती है। भक्तों के लिए यह अन्नपूर्णा स्वरूप हैं , इसलिए अष्टमी के दिन कन्याओं के पूजन का विधान है। यह धन , वैभव और सुख-शांति की अधिष्ठात्री देवी हैं। इनका स्वरूप उज्जवल , कोमल , श्वेतवर्णा तथा श्वेत वस्त्रधारी है। यह एक हाथ में त्रिशूल और दूसरे में डमरू लिए हुए हैं। गायन और संगीत से प्रसन्न होने वाली ' महागौरी ' सफेद वृषभ यानि बैल पर सवार हैं।

9. सिद्धिदात्री

नवीं शक्ति ' सिद्धिदात्री ' सभी सिद्धियों को प्रदान करने वाली हैं। इनकी उपासना से भक्तों की सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण हो जाती हैं। कमल के आसन पर विराजमान देवी हाथों में कमल , शंख , गदा , सुदर्शन चक्र धारण किए हुए हैं। भक्त इनकी पूजा से यश , बल और धन की प्राप्ति करते हैं। सिद्धिदात्री की पूजा के लिए नवाहन का प्रसाद , नवरस युक्त भोजन तथा नौ प्रकार के फल-फूल आदि का अर्पण करना चाहिए। इस तरह नवरात्र का समापन करने वाले भक्तों को धर्म , अर्थ , काम और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। सिद्धिदात्री देवी सरस्वती का भी स्वरूप हैं , जो श्वेत वस्त्रालंकार से युक्त महाज्ञान और मधुर स्वर से भक्तों को सम्मोहित करती हैं।

vindhyavasini davi II 2 (विंध्यवासिनी देवी 2)

भगवती विंध्यवासिनी आद्या महाशक्ति हैं। विंध्याचलसदा से उनका निवास-स्थान रहा है। जगदम्बा की नित्य उपस्थिति ने विंध्यगिरिको जाग्रत शक्तिपीठ बना दिया है। महाभारत के विराट पर्व में धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर देवी की स्तुति करते हुए कहते हैं- विन्ध्येचैवनग-श्रेष्ठे तवस्थानंहि शाश्वतम्।हे माता! पर्वतों में श्रेष्ठ विंध्याचलपर आप सदैव विराजमान रहती हैं। पद्मपुराणमें विंध्याचल-निवासिनीइन महाशक्ति को विंध्यवासिनी के नाम से संबंधित किया गया है- विन्ध्येविन्ध्याधिवासिनी।

श्रीमद्देवीभागवतके दशम स्कन्ध में कथा आती है, सृष्टिकत्र्ता ब्रह्माजीने जब सबसे पहले अपने मन से स्वायम्भुवमनु और शतरूपाको उत्पन्न किया। तब विवाह करने के उपरान्त स्वायम्भुवमनु ने अपने हाथों से देवी की मूर्ति बनाकर सौ वर्षो तक कठोर तप किया। उनकी तपस्या से संतुष्ट होकर भगवती ने उन्हें निष्कण्टक राज्य, वंश-वृद्धि एवं परम पद पाने का आशीर्वाद दिया। वर देने के बाद महादेवी विंध्याचलपर्वत पर चली गई। इससे यह स्पष्ट होता है कि सृष्टि के प्रारंभ से ही विंध्यवासिनी की पूजा होती रही है। सृष्टि का विस्तार उनके ही शुभाशीषसे हुआ।

त्रेतायुगमें भगवान श्रीरामचन्द्र सीताजीके साथ विंध्याचलआए थे। मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम श्रीराम द्वारा स्थापित रामेश्वर महादेव से इस शक्तिपीठ की माहात्म्य और बढ गया है। द्वापरयुगमें मथुरा के राजा कंस ने जब अपने बहन-बहनोई देवकी-वसुदेव को कारागार में डाल दिया और वह उनकी सन्तानों का वध करने लगा। तब वसुदेवजीके कुल-पुरोहित गर्ग ऋषि ने कंस के वध एवं श्रीकृष्णावतारहेतु विंध्याचलमें लक्षचण्डीका अनुष्ठान करके देवी को प्रसन्न किया। जिसके फलस्वरूप वे नन्दरायजीके यहाँ अवतरित हुई।

मार्कण्डेयपुराणके अन्तर्गत वर्णित दुर्गासप्तशती(देवी-माहात्म्य) के ग्यारहवें अध्याय में देवताओं के अनुरोध पर भगवती उन्हें आश्वस्त करते हुए कहती हैं, देवताओं वैवस्वतमन्वन्तर के अट्ठाइसवेंयुग में शुम्भऔर निशुम्भनाम के दो महादैत्यउत्पन्न होंगे। तब मैं नन्दगोपके घर में उनकी पत्नी यशोदा के गर्भ से अवतीर्ण हो विन्ध्याचल में जाकर रहूँगी और उक्त दोनों असुरों का नाश करूँगी।

लक्ष्मीतन्त्र नामक ग्रन्थ में भी देवी का यह उपर्युक्त वचन शब्दश:मिलता है। ब्रज में नन्द गोप के यहाँ उत्पन्न महालक्ष्मीकी अंश-भूता कन्या को नन्दा नाम दिया गया। मूर्तिरहस्य में ऋषि कहते हैं- नन्दा नाम की नन्द के यहाँ उत्पन्न होने वाली देवी की यदि भक्तिपूर्वकस्तुति और पूजा की जाए तो वे तीनों लोकों को उपासक के आधीन कर देती हैं।

श्रीमद्भागवत महापुराणके श्रीकृष्ण-जन्माख्यान में यह वर्णित है कि देवकी के आठवें गर्भ से आविर्भूत श्रीकृष्ण को वसुदेवजीने कंस के भय से रातोंरात यमुनाजीके पार गोकुल में नन्दजीके घर पहुँचा दिया तथा वहाँ यशोदा के गर्भ से पुत्री के रूप में जन्मीं भगवान की शक्ति योगमाया को चुपचाप वे मथुरा ले आए। आठवीं संतान के जन्म का समाचार सुन कर कंस कारागार में पहुँचा। उसने उस नवजात कन्या को पत्थर पर जैसे ही पटक कर मारना चाहा, वैसे ही वह कन्या कंस के हाथों से छूटकर आकाश में पहुँच गई और उसने अपना दिव्य स्वरूप प्रदर्शित किया। कंस के वध की भविष्यवाणी करके भगवती विन्ध्याचल वापस लौट गई।

मन्त्रशास्त्रके सुप्रसिद्ध ग्रंथ शारदातिलक में विंध्यवासिनी का वनदुर्गा के नाम से यह ध्यान बताया गया है-
सौवर्णाम्बुजमध्यगांत्रिनयनांसौदामिनीसन्निभां चक्रंशंखवराभयानिदधतीमिन्दो:कलां बिभ्रतीम्। ग्रैवेयाङ्गदहार-कुण्डल-धरामारवण्ड-लाद्यै:स्तुतां ध्यायेद्विन्ध्यनिवासिनींशशिमुखीं पा‌र्श्वस्थपञ्चाननाम्॥

जो देवी स्वर्ण-कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं, तीन नेत्रों वाली हैं, विद्युत के सदृश कान्ति वाली हैं, चार भुजाओं में शंख, चक्र, वर और अभय मुद्रा धारण किए हुए हैं, मस्तक पर सोलह कलाओं से परिपूर्ण चन्द्र सुशोभित है, गले में सुन्दर हार, बांहों में बाजूबन्द, कानों में कुण्डल धारण किए इन देवी की इन्द्रादिसभी देवता स्तुति करते हैं। विंध्याचलपर निवास करने वाली, चंद्रमा के समान सुंदर मुखवालीइन विंध्यवासिनी के समीप सदाशिवविराजितहैं।

सम्भवत:पूर्वकाल में विंध्य-क्षेत्रमें घना जंगल होने के कारण ही भगवती विन्ध्यवासिनीका वनदुर्गा नाम पडा। वन को संस्कृत में अरण्य कहा जाता है। इसी कारण ज्येष्ठ मास के शुक्लपक्ष की षष्ठी विंध्यवासिनी-महापूजा की पावन तिथि होने से अरण्यषष्ठी के नाम से विख्यात हो गई है।

Vijayadasami

Durgadasami, Vijayadasami or, also known as Dussehra or Dasara, is celebrated on Ashwayuja Shukla Dasami. Vijayadasami 2011 date is October 6th, 2011. It is celebrated to remember the success of good over evil. On this day, Mother Goddess Shakti (Durga) demolished buffalo demon Mahishasura.

And, Lord Sri Rama killed demon king Ravanasura and returned to his kingdom Ayodhya where his nation celebrated the festival of victory (Vijayadashami). On the day of Vijaya Dashami, Ravanasura, who is also called Dashakanta was killed, to commemorate his defeat this festival is also called as ‘Dussehra’ / Dasara / Dassara.

‘Ravanasura Vadha’ – a tradition of blasting the idol of Ravana is performed on Vijaya Dashami in some places in India.

Simollanghan, Shami Puja, and Ayudha pooja are main rituals in North India during Vijayadasami. In Kerala and some places of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Vidyarambham or Saraswati Pooja is the main ritual of the day

Navaratri 2011

The nine-day festival of Navratri, or Navaratri, in Hindu religion devoted to the nine manifestations of Goddess Maa Durga. Navratri 2011 dates are from September 28th toOctober 5th, 2011. According to the Hindu calendar, Navratri begins from the first day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin which usually coincides with the end of the rainy season. The most important Navratri in a year is the Sharadiya Navratra which begins on the first day of the bright half of Ashvin or Ashwayuja (September-October) as per traditional Hindu calendar.

The nine days have great religious significance as Goddess Durga, the divine mother, had destroyed the evil force (in the form of the demon Mahisashura) during this period.

Nine days of Navratri

First Day (September 28, 2011)

The first day is devoted to the Maa Durga is called Shailputri, the daughter of the Himalayas. She is a form of Shakti, the companion of Lord Shiva.

Second Day (September 29, 2011)

The second day is dedicated to the Maa Durga is known as 'Brahmacharini'. The name is derivative of the word 'Brahma', which means 'Tapa' or penace. She is also a form of Mata Shakti.

Third Day (September 29, 2011)

The third day is dedicated to the goddess Chandraghanta, the symbolic representation of beauty and bravery.

Fourth Day (September 30, 2011)

The fourth day is dedicated to the goddess Kushmandas, the creator of the entire Universe.

Fifth Day (October 1, 2011)

The fifth day is dedicated to the Goddess Skand Mata, the mother of the chief warrior of the Gods army the Skanda

Sixth Day (October 2, 2011)

Durga Puja begins in Bengal – Saraswati Puja Avaha The sixth day is dedicated to the goddess Katyayani with three eyes and four hands.

Seventh Day (October 3, 2011)

The seventh day is dedicated to the Goddess 'Kalratri', meant to make the devotees fearless.

Eighth Day (October 4, 2011)

The eight day is dedicated to the Mata Rani or 'Maha Gauri', represents calmness and exhibits wisdom.

Tenth Day (October 5, 2011)
The ninth day is dedicated to Durga also referred as Siddhidatri. It is believed that she has all the eight siddhis and is worshipped by all the Rishis and Yogis.

God in Hinduism

In Hinduism the concept of God is complex and depends on the particular tradition. The concept spans from absolute monism all the way to henotheism, monotheism and polytheism. In majority of Vaishnavism traditions, He is Vishnu, God, and the text identifies this being as Krishna, sometimes referred as svayam bhagavan.

The term isvara - from the root is, to have extraordinary power. Some forms of traditional sankhya systems contrast purusha (devine, or souls) to prakriti (nature or energy), however term of sovereign God, ishvara is mentioned six times in the Atharva Veda, and is central to many traditions. For Sindhi Hindus, who are deeply influenced by Sikhism, God is seen as the omnipotent cultivation of all Hindu gods and goddesses.

In short, the soul paramatma of all Gods and Goddesses are the omnipresent Brahman and are enlightened beings.

Characteristics of God

One set of attributes (and their common interpretations) are:

Jñāna (Omniscience), defined as the power to know about all beings simultaneously
Aishvarya (Sovereignty, derived from the word Ishvara), which consists in unchallenged rule over all
Shakti (Energy), or power, which is the capacity to make the impossible possible
Bala/Bela (Strength), which is the capacity to support everything by will and without any fatigue
Vīrya (Vigor), or valour which indicates the power to retain immateriality as the supreme being in spite of being the material cause of mutable creations
Tejas (Splendor), which expresses his self-sufficiency and the capacity to overpower everything by his spiritual effulgence; (cited from Bhakti Schools of Vedanta, by Swami Tapasyānanda.)

A second set of six characteristics are:

Jñāna (Omniscience)
Vairagya (Detachment)
Yashas (Fame)
Aishvarya (Sovereignty, derived from the word Ishvara)
Srī (Glory)
Dharma (Righteousness)

Other important qualities attributed to God are Gambhīrya (grandeur), Audārya (generosity), and Kārunya (compassion).

Chanted prayers, or mantras, are central to Hindu worship. Many mantras are from the sacred Vedas, and in Sanskrit.

श्री श्री विन्ध्यनिवासिनी आद्या महाशक्ति हैं।विन्ध्याचल सदा से उनका निवास-स्थान रहा है। जगदम्बा की नित्य उपस्थिति ने विंध्यगिरिको जाग्रत शक्तिपीठ बना दिया है।

प्रयाग एवं काशी के मध्य विंध्याचल नामक तीर्थ है जहां माँ विंध्यवासिनी निवास करती हैं। श्री गंगा जी के तट पर स्थित यह महातीर्थ शास्त्रों के द्वारा सभी शक्तिपीठों में प्रधान घोषित किया गया है। यह महातीर्थ भारत के उन 51 शक्तिपीठों में प्रथम और अंतिम शक्तिपीठ है जो गंगातट पर स्थित है।

“Mantra is a reality based on scientific norms not a myth. The word ‘Mantra’ compromises of two words i.e. ‘Man’ which means to concentrate or focus your mind and the other ‘Tra’ which means to safeguard or defense mechanism from all sorts of negativity.”

Mantras were given by sages, the authors of the sacred hymns as a remedy against the bad effects of Grahas (planets) and the Nakshatras. Mantra provide peace & prosperity to the mind, with it one can make any person, object or place safe from the negative energies. The Mantra(s) has their origin from the 50 alphabets i.e. ‘a’ to ‘ksha’ which are further known as ‘Matrika’ i.e. mother. The 1 alphabet Mantra is known as ‘Pind’, 2 alphabets as ‘Katri’, 3 to 9 alphabets Mantra as ‘Beej or Bija’, 10 to 20 as ‘Mantra’ and 20 above alphabets in a Mantra is known as ‘Mala’. It is said that the secret of the origin of the largest trees on the globe are hidden inside their seed similarly there are many positive effects that are hidden inside these small words or ‘Mantra’ which one cannot see until & unless they realize.

Mantras have special significance while doing any sort of ritual and highly spiritual ‘Siddhi(s)’. There are many rules or processes that one has to follow while reciting a Mantra like for example one should add ‘ Hreem Shree Kleem’ in the starting of every mantra for much success and addition of ‘Aum (Om)’ brings much success to the individual. God Shiva is considered as Lord of all Mantra(s) hence all Mantras can be recited on Rudraksha mala (rosary), but if they are specialized Mantra then recitation on special rosaries like crystal, tulsi, chandan etc. gives instant benefits. Further while following any Mantra process one has to be very particular with the sound and rhythm, as both of them have special significance in this subject. The individual who recite Mantra with definite rhythm get maximum benefits on the other hand if it is recited like reading a book it generate very less positivism.

Mantra Sadhna (process) is not a easy task, it is something as rigid as modern technology nor is it purely scientific as Acharya Vinod says “it is a deep mystic approach which requires Astha (faith) and sayam (patience) for its understanding”. It is not advised to start recitation of any mantra without knowing its nature, benefits and importance thoroughly. That is the reason why it is well written in all the ancient sacred books (Shastras) that one has to have a mentor to guide him/her before starting any Mantra process (Sadhna), without proper guidance one could suffer malefic effects as well. Moreover no mantra is complete in itself as Acharya Vinod says, “in order to obtain complete benefits from the mantra it is necessary to have complete knowledge of the rituals and its practice methods”

The word NAVRATRA is made by two words, NAV and RATRA. Nav means Nine and Ratra means Gyan (Knowledge). In our "Puranas" (Religious books) this Ratra is described as of five types. They are "Vaishik", "Yaugic", " Bhaktiprad", "Muktiprad" and "Tatwatmak". Whatever riligious rituals are observed during Navratra, these five "Gyans" are obtained by the devotee depending upon his/her feelings. Nav i.e. Nine denotes the nine "roop" (kinds) of Godess Durga. These nine roop are:

SHAILPUTRI

Maa is known as SHAILPUTRI in her first roop. Devi is posed to be as sitting on an oxen, and is holding a Shool ( a javelin) in her right hand and a lotus in the left hand.

BRAHMACHARINI

Maa is known as BRAHMACHARINI in her second roop. On the second her pooja is of much importance. Here BHRAMA is refrred to as TAPASYA ( Penance). Those who worship her, attain, Tup ( Religious Austerity), Tyag (Sacrifice), and Vairagya (Asceticism). Devi is holding a garland of victory in her right hand and a KAMANDAL ( a kind of pot) in her left hand.

CHANDRAGHANTA

Maa is known as CHANDRAGHANTA in her third roop. She is worshipped on the third day of Navratra. Those who worship Devi Chandraghanta get eternal strength and is blessed by Devi to be happy through out his life. A bell shaped mark of moon is present on the fore head of Devi, that is why she is known as Chandraghanta The colour of her body is golden, and she is posed as to be ready for war. By her blessings all the hinderences coming in way of a person are removed.

KOOSHMANDA

Maa is known as KOOSHMANDA in her fourth roop.

SKANDMATA

Maa is known as SKANDMATA in her fifth roop. According to Puranas, Sanat kumar (Son) who emerged from the Shakti of Maa was named as SKAND. And being the mother of SKAND, Maa is known as SKANDMATA. By the worship of SKANDMATA all the physical and material problems are removed.

KATYAYINI

Maa is known as KATYAYINI in her sixth roop. To help the deities, Maa appeared in the Ashram of Mahrishi Katyayan, that is why she was known as KATYAYINI. Maa protects her devotees from all the possible ways. She is worshiped on the sixth day of Navarata.

KALRATRI

Maa is known as KALRATRI in her seventh roop. In this roop of Maa, there is the shakti (power) of destruction. Due to the presense of power to destroy death i.e. KAL, Maa she is known as KALRATRI. By her worship people get rid of all kinds of dangers and risk.

MAHAGAURI

Maa is known as MAHAGAURI in her eight roop. She is known as the Devi of prosperity and is the presiding deity. She is posed to be as sitting on an oxen and has got four hands. Mahagarui is known by several names. Maa gives wealth to her devotees and is protector of the husbands of her female devotees.

SIDHIDATRI

Maa is known as SIDHIDATRI in her ninth roop. She blesses her devotees with all kinds of SIDHIS (perfection) and gives her devotees MOKSHA (Salvation). Those who want to attain SIDHIS, pay homage to SIDHIDATRI, and they always remain rrounded by other.

There is a concept of Shaktipeeth in India. Shaktipeeth are actually places where the Goddess of power or the female part of power is supposed to be residing. The female part of Power has been named Shakti and is worshiped in the form of Goddess Durga. There are as many as 51 Shaktipeeth in India Vindhyachal is one of them. Situated at the distance of 90 Kilometers from Varanasi, Vindhyachal is worth visiting once. The place is famous for its temples namely Vindhyavasini, Asthbhuja and Kalikhoh.

According to the Hindu mythology when Sati died, Lord Shiva set out to world tour carrying her body. In days to come, the body started decaying and begun to fall apart. It is said that the left toe of Sati fell at the place where the current temple of Vindhyavasini is located. The temple is on a very low hillock and it is believed that Goddess Durga had established herself here after having killed the demon king Mahishasura. Thus the Goddess Durga is referred to as Vindhyavasini in these regions.

Navratras

Navratras are observed twice a year, once in Chaitra, preceding Rama Navami, and then in Ashvin (September - October) preceding Dussehra. The nine-day Navratra commences with the new moon of Ashvin and terminates with Mahanavami, on the ninth lunar day of the bright half of the month. During these nine days, devotees keep strict fast and Durga is worshipped. The style of observing Navratra in different parts of the country may be different, but its sole aim is to propitiate Mother Durga and to seek her blessings
Navratri, the festival of nights, lasts for 9 days with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worship Goddess Durga Maa.
1st - 3rd day of Navratri
On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room of the house and barley seeds are sown on it. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a blessing from god. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy. Her various manifestations, Kumari, Parvati and Kali are all worshipped during these days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman.
4th - 6th day of Navratri
During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped. On the fifth day which is known as Lalita Panchami, it is traditional, to gather and display all literature available in the house, light a lamp or 'diya' to invoke Saraswati Maa, the Goddess of knowledge and art.
7th - 8th day of Navratri
These final days belong to Saraswati Maa who is worshipped to acquire the spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. But on the 8th day of this colourful festival, yagna (holy fire) is performed. Ghee (clarified butter), kheer (rice pudding) and sesame seeds form the holy offering to Goddess Durga Maa.
Mahanavami
The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This ritual is performed in most parts of the country.
